The Black Cat monthly round-up: April 2026

I’m really pleased to be able to introduce the new logo for Black Cat Editorial Services. The previous image was non-exclusive, so I really needed something unique and bespoke for the Black Cat brand. It is something I’d been meaning to commission for a while, but I finally had a little bit of time to dedicate to thinking about how I wanted to represent the business (and, therefore, myself).

A friend put together a mock-up based on some designs I like – the previous logo image (a black cat perched on a branch), the splatter rainbow stag print by Katherine Williams, and a painting I have by an unknown artist, which features the silhouette of a cat watching over pages from old novels. Of course, I have my own chonky cat companion, and he is much of the inspiration for the design of the final cat figure.

I wanted an elegant, understated logo that captures a sense of thoughtfulness and magic – where the cat looks on at all the potential and wonder in the realm of the story. Perhaps the birds symbolise ideas taking flight, or authors soaring with their own narrative creations.

I think the designer has done a great job of translating my ideas into a logo that reflects the vibe of the business and subtly represents my specialisms and clients. Here it is:

I’ve started adding it to my documentation and updating my online presence. I hope you like it as much as I do!

What I’ve been working on

Early April saw me finishing off the proofread of a memoir and the copy-edits of two novels, one a thriller and the other an urban fantasy. These were followed by the proofread of the third book in a slice-of-life series – I worked on the first book in 2023 and the second in 2025, and I’m glad to have been able to provide help with continuity of style through the years. My manuscript critique for this month was of a unique portal fantasy; I always love working with challenging structures and unusual narrative choices, so this was right up my street.

Looking ahead

I am overdue a proper holiday, so I will be off to Spain at the beginning of May.
