The Black Cat monthly round-up: February 2026

February was a month of nearly non-stop rain and constant grey skies. Fortunately, I had the company of plenty of interesting manuscripts to get me through my work days.

What I’ve been working on

I started with the copy-edit of a collection of short stories inspired by famous operas. It was interesting to see how those narratives could be translated to a different medium. This was followed by the copy-edit of a mystery novel set during the heyday of the Roman Empire. Alongside these, I had the proofread of a cosy crime novel that made good use of the perspective of an engaging perpetrator. To wrap up the month, I copy-edited the sequel to a dystopian YA novel that I worked on a few years ago. It’s always great to find out what happens next!

What I read for fun

I have been a member of a local book club for a year or so now, and it has been a great way to expand my range of genres and to understand how readers interact with different types of writing. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna is a lovely work of cosy fantasy. I think it does a great job of providing a comforting, engaging world without completely eradicating any sense of stakes for the characters.

Looking ahead

March is shaping up to be not quite as busy as February, but perhaps there will be some sunshine to enjoy…
