The Black Cat monthly round-up: May 2024

There’s not a lot of work to report for May. I had a fairly light schedule for most of the month, and then I flew off to Scotland for the last week. I went to visit a friend, and we had a lovely time, despite the cloudy weather. Helensburgh is a beautiful place, and I was fortunate enough to be able to visit my friend’s loan horse. Here he is, looking thrilled to meet me. To be fair to him, we did arrive while he was in the middle of a snooze.

What I’ve been working on

I had the developmental edit of a feminist urban fantasy novel to accompany until early June. One of my regular clients asked me to cast an eye over a pitch letter to a major publisher – I don’t often have the capacity to take on smaller projects, so I was glad to be able to help on this one. The copy-edit of a YA fantasy novel arrived in the middle of the month, and it will take me into June.

What I read for fun

Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros, has been on my radar for a while – and given its domination of book-related social media spaces, I’m sure that’s not a surprise. No book can live up to that level of hype, but I did find it enjoyable (if a little frustrating in places). Tairn is by far and away my favourite character. I think, if you’ve read and analysed lots of fantasy fiction, you may be underwhelmed by the ‘twists’, but there’s enough depth to the world-building to hold interest. However, it is the first book in a long time that I’ve been able to discuss with two friends, independently, who have also read it – and, although there may be some criticisms, representation of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes in popular media seems welcome.

Looking ahead

June is likely to be another fairly quiet month as I am hoping to be able to have some out-and-about days, weather permitting!
